Tattooing is probably the oldest form of body art. Its roots can be traced up to the primeval period. Tattoos have gained tremendous popularity among the youngsters and new age practioners. It seems like tattoos are becoming the latest craze within the fashion world and even the ordinary people are also getting attracted to this form of body art.

Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art has continuously gained popularity all across the globe; technically, tattooing is micro-pigment implantation, a process of making marks on the skin by injecting dye into the skin. At one time tattoos were only accepted among sailors, bikers or freaks. Today it seems like almost everyone has a tattoo. Rightly said, "Tattoos are not taboo anymore".

History reveals, tattooing has been in practice in parts of Europe and Asia since Neolithic times. Evidence of tattooing in Japan has been traced back to Paleolithic era. The word "tattoo" is said to be desired from the Dutch word tiptoe, meaning a rapid, rhythmic tapping.

Various cultures and ethnic groups have had their own tattoo traditions, ranging from rubbing cuts and other wounds with ashes, to hand-picking the skin to insert dyes.

Historians say the first tattoos probably were created by accident. Someone had a small wound and rubbed it with a dirty hand with soot and ashes from the fire. It resulted to a permanent scar mark on the skin, which is known as tattoos know. As the time passed they learned to use it intentionally and creatively.

Different types of tattoos which are currently in trend are Abstraction, Naturalistic tattoos, pledge or dedication designs, simplification of stylized designs, and complex structures or combination. It depends on an individual choice the type of tattoo he/she wants.

Always try to have your tattoo done at a reputable tattoo parlor. Ensure the parlor is clean and sanitized all the time because there have been some cases of infection caused after the tattooing.

Aftercare

Tattoo after care is a significant part of tattooing. Fresh tattoos are like wounds which needs extreme care and attention. Fresh tattooing area must be kept away from dirt and dust, and if possible wrap the tattooed area with cling film or paper towels.

There are some companies which manufacture creams and ointments of tattoo aftercare. Skin reaction can result to permanent disfigurement of tattoos.
